Ski touring skills days |
This day will help you develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to enjoy ski adventures in the Scottish Mountains. It is aimed at folk who have some winter experience and want to travel by ski to spice up winter trips and as a way to tour through the mountains to Munros or Corbetts. The day will be all about the journey with a focus on planning, route-choice and navigation, rather than off-piste down-hill technique and performance.
Dates: Please fill out the Enquire form and I'll get back to you with availability.
Content: During the day we will be journeying, potentially over a Munro or Corbett, and covering as many of the following topics as possible (dependent on the group needs and conditions); route choice, navigation, equipment, Be Avalanche Aware, use of transceiver/shovel/probe for companion rescue and technical skills.
Logistics: Courses are run in the Southern Highlands, Drumochter, Loch Tay and Ben Lawers areas. Best venue will be dictated by the conditions, confirmed a couple of days prior to the course and a meeting point arranged; most probably either Mhor 84 by Lochearnhead or the very fine Balinuig Motor Grill on the A9. There is potential for getting a lift, or ride-sharing from the Edinburgh area, but I'm not a taxi-service!
Pre-requisites: So long as you're fit enough to enjoy a modest winter Munro, or Corbett then fitness-wise you'll be fine. Ski-wise you should be able to get down a pisted Blue to 'light' Red ... in whatever style!
Cost: £60 per person. Min groups size of 3, max 6.
Ski-touring equipment hire: If you don't have your own then I can arrange hire of quality ski-touring boots, skis, poles, skins , ski-crampons and transceiver/shovel/probe (TSP) . Dependent on what is required; approximately £25 - £30 per day.
Personal Equipment required: Bring your own ski touring kit, or hire can be arranged. Recommended personal kit is basically the same clothing and equipment you would use on a winter walking day in the Scottish mountains. Please ensure you have a rucksack of at least 35l/40l, and bring a pair of lightweight boots or trainers in case we need to hike any distances off snow. You must bring your own transceiver/shovel/probe (TSP) set - or hire one from us.
Instructor Qualifications: Over 30 years experience in the Scottish mountains and hold the Alpine Ski Leader, SnowSports Mountain Leader, Winter Mountain Leader and International Mountain Leader qualifications. The course is covered by SnowSport Scotland's professional indemnity insurance.
